Reaching More People With Disabilities
AdaptiVision is an online retailer that provides assistive technology devices to individuals with low vision. They worked with an agency to build a new e-commerce website a few years ago. However, the agency did not make it with accessibility in mind.
On the surface, their website looked fine and was bringing in sales, but screen reader users couldn’t navigate it or make a purchase.
Unfortunately, this is a common scenario, as many digital agencies are still not prioritizing accessibility for their customers.
Once they realized the issue, AdaptiVision reached out for help, and I got right to work.
Here’s what that process looked like:
- Performed an audit of five key pages to understand major accessibility barriers.
- Reviewed findings and created a plan to fix all issues found in the audit.
- Fixed and retested all accessibility issues, starting with the highest priority fixes first.
- Trained staff on accessibility best practices for content creation and website administration.
- Established a plan for ongoing accessibility testing and support, because regular maintenance is crucial for a lasting accessibility strategy.
Here’s what AdaptiVision experienced after these changes:
✅ Reduced their legal risk by ensuring WCAG compliance
✅ Improved user experience across the board
✅ Made it possible for people with disabilities to use the site
